Also, we learnt about the menyak dance. Next, Orang ulu long house. we learnt about the process of padi, how it is made. And also learnt about banboo where the people there make use of bamboo for various reasons. After that, we watched a performance. Then, to the iban longhouse. We were taught about the culture, dance and weapons that we used by the iban people.

Day 3,
Went to a school, SMK Siburan. We learnt about how the schooling life were over there, compared to our schooling lifestyles. Then, we went trekking at the Gunung Gading, searching for the Raffles sia, also learnt about nature reserve. "SOMETHING happened to zaki in the hotel on the night of day 3"

Day 4,

And, Thats it!
Lastly, i would like to thank the tour guides, Aunty Yong & Aunty Lyn to be able to make this trip successful.

Ok, bye!
Day 1
we went to a cultural village located in sarawak. we then proceed to touring the cultural village. i predict we took about two hours to complete our tour. then we proceed to watch a cultural performance.that performance was a bummer and a humdrum. later that night we get to experience dancing a bidayuh dance. im quite gratified and content as all the students there were cooperative and appreciative of the dance. we were also told some stories by aunty lin (tour guide) and leo (chief).

Day 2

we had breakfast at the cultural village itself. if i can distinctly remember i think we ate mee goreng and some hot dogs. we then went to kampung telaga air. we learned how the fishing boat is made nad also to make a malay traditional kuih. we also had went fishing. it was a dreary experience. however it also tests one's equanimity and serenity. we then proceed to luch and then shopping before checking in the hotel. we then had our dinner at a hawker centre. the food there is "exquisite". then we went to another shopping mall before walking back to the hotel.

Day 3
after breakfast we travelled to a school called smk siburan. we were given a hearty and hospitable reception. we learned more about the school and had toured the school too. after visiting the school we left and proceeded to gunung gading national park. we get to see the rafflesia (not bloomed yet). we then proceed to dinner and then went back to the hotel.

Day 4

we checked out the hotel at 1.30 and then went to orang utan reserve. we were lucky and propitious. 14 of the orang utans came. then we went to sarawak museum. we get to shop again at main bazaar before dinner at kfc. then we went to the airport to travel back to singapore.

i would like to thank aunty lin and aunty yong yong for being discerning, kind and amiable. i would also thank mr zul for being most of the time with the boys making it a merriment trip. thks

SKSS boys do the tribal dance!

My Days in Sarawak

Day 1, we went to cultural village from the airport. The place was beautiful with a mountain there. We learnt that there were a lot of ethnic groups in Singapore such as Orang Iban, Bidayuh and more. In fact, the chief of the village was an Iban. We went to the different longhouses of the different tribe and each was different than the other. We slept our first night in an Iban longhouse. Day 2, We went to breakfast and after breakfast, we headed for Kampung Telaga Air which is a fishing village and we learnt how to make kuih and a person there showed us how he make a boat. It was very educational for us, After that, we went to the houses of the village people. They were different from Singapore flats. Each house took up a lot of land. After that, I went fishing. Eventhough none of us caught a fish, I felt happy as this is my first time fishing and I got to catch a fish head. After fishing we went for lunch. After lunch, we went to check in at Merdeka Palace Hotel. It was of course very different from the longhouses we stayed in. After resting in our rooms, we went for dinner in a seafood hawker centre. The food was very delicious. After dinner, the boys and girls separated as the boys went to Sarawak plaza while the girls went to Parkson. Our main attraction in the Plaza. LEGO. We had fun playing lego. After that, we went back to the hotel and sleep with full of excitement for our next day. Day 3, after breakfast, went to SMK Siburan, one of the school in SARAWAK. We mingled with the students there and had a tour around the school with the students introducing the school, not the teachers. After waving goodbye to the students there, We headed to Gunung Gading, one of sarawak's national park. We had our packed lunch there. After lunch, we went for a 30 mins trek to see the Rafflesia, the world's biggest flower. The flower had not fully bloomed yet so not smell was coming out of the Rafflesia. After that, we went back to our hotel for a rest and a change of clothes before we headed to dinner. Dinner was at HARTS which was a chicken buffet and it was simply irresistible. Afer ending off our dinner with ice cream, we again went to Sarawak Plaza to play lego again. After that, we went back to the hotel and a lot of intresting things happen in our which I will not mention in this blog. Day 4, After breakfast and checking out from the hotel, we went to the orang utan reserve where we were very lucky as we saw a lot of orang utan in their natural habitat. The biggest of them, Ritchie, ageing 27 and weighing 120 kg. After visiting the orang utan, we went to the Sarawak museum where we saw a lot of artifacts about Sarawak and learnt more about the history of Sarawak. After that, we went shopping and we shopped in the main Bazaar where we could buy stuffs for our family members. Then we went to the latest Sarawak shopping complex, The Spring. After that, we went for dinner in KFC which is also our last dinner in Sarawak. Then, we went to the hotel and boarded the flight back to Singapore. Overall, the whole trip was very exciting and the teachers were very sporting especially Mr Zulkifli who was like the leader of the boy group. If there is another trip like this, I would surely go again.

Sarawak from Group 2's eyes

When we arrive in Kuching International Airport, we were so excited. After we arrive at the Sarawak Cultural Village, we were instructed to go to the Iban longhouse to stay for the night. When we saw the longhouse, our impression of a longhouse changed. From the name of it, we thought a longhouse was supposed to be long. I guess this is where the phrase ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’ comes in. After settling down, we went for our lunch. We then proceed to the different types of longhouses in the whole cultural village. Some of the examples are the Rumah Bidayuh, Rumah Orang Ulu and Rumah Cina Kebun. They are very different from each other. After travelling for quite some time, we had a special cultural show held by the locals. It was very entertaining as its our first time viewing a close-up kind of show. We went back to our longhouse and the headman tell us stories about the Iban tribe. We then had a free time to mingle around and know each other better while waiting for our dinner. After dinner, we went back to the longhouse to learn the Bidayuh traditional dance. It was an enjoyable and unforgettable experience for us. Despite the heat and tiredness, we had a lot of fun. After that we had stories told by the tour guide and the headman. The headman told us about different kinds of festivals that they celebrate here. One of them is the Gawai Hantu Palak. The tour guide told us a legendary story about why the Bidayuh tribe would not get eaten by the crocodiles. It was fascinating. Overall, we learn a lot of unexpected and valuable things on the first day.

Group reflection no. 2
After breakfast at the Cultural Village, we head down to ‘Kampung Telaga Air’. When we arrive, we learned how to make a Sarawak traditional kueh call Kueh Penyaram. We also learned the steps to make a fishing boat. We then went to one of the villager’s house and we can really tell the difference between the houses there and the houses in Singapore. We were shocked when we enter the house. It was amazing. We had different perspective of their houses, which made it a great experience. The houses there are big and spacious, not like the houses in Singapore. We met with the owner of the house and also find out more about them. They are very friendly and kind people. We took pictures to capture the moments we had with them. After that we went for fishing. Although we didn’t manage to catch any fish, we were amazingly patient. For the most of us, it was our first experience and realised it wasn’t that easy. It was fun, even. After that, we had our lunch. Then, we went to Museum Pusak(Cat Museum). The place was filled with statues of cats all over. It was stunning. We find majority of the cat statues adorable. There were also brochures and pictures dispalyed in the museum, giving us a lot more informations on the beautiful Kuching. Next, we went to the Kek Lapis house. We learnt that Kek Lapis is a must-have on festivals like Hari Raya Aidil Fitri. We had the chance to taste different types of Kek Lapis and we even took orders to bring them back to Singapore so that our family and friends get to enjoy the taste of the Sarawak delicacy. We then went to check-in in the Merdeka Palace Hotel to stay for the two nights. We had our scrumptious seafood dinner in a crowded hawker centre in Kuching. After that we went to the Kuching Waterfront. It looks a little bit like Clarke Quay in Singapore. After strolling for quite awhile, we went back to our hotel to get our sleep. It was a tiring yet enjoyable day.

Group reflection no. 3

After breakfast we proceed to SMK Siburan. We had thoughts about the school. We expected the school to be small but we were dumbfounded as the school was bigger than ours. We were also shocked that they have hostel in their school. Its like as if it is a boarding school. They gave us a very welcoming visit with their special dance. It was heartwarming and made our morning. The prefectorial board were exceptionally kind and friendly with us. We really like them. And amazingly, all the prefects are only in secondary 1. They surprised us with their strong sense of discipline. But their surrounding is very different from ours. Their rooms are much more smaller and compact. We then exchanged our email and contact numbers with them. They have a bookshop too. Theirs are bigger than us and the stuffs they sell are very different from us. In their bookshop, there are things like clothes, toiletries etc. We feel that they sell these things for the students who stays in the school’s hostel.
After that we proceed to Gunung Gading National Park for our trekking. The ride there was extremely long. About 1 and a half hour. We had our brief lunch and then went to the meeting area before the trail begins. Before our trekking expedition begin, we went to a small waterfall and the Rafflesia flower statue to capture the moments with our cameras. For the first quarter of the trail, we already felt the exhaustion of the trekking. Throughout the journey, the tour guide also showed and explained to us the different types of plants located there. We were also extremely honoured to have the chance to see the largest flower in the world, the Rafflesia. We then went back to our coach and were on our way back to the hotel. We had a buffet dinner at Hartz Chicken’s in Sarawak Plaza. It was delicious. We went to shop and stroll around after that. Soon after, we walk back to our hotel to get our important sleep. Haha.

Group 1's take on Day 3

Everyone had to wake up early in the morning to have breakfast in the hotel at 7am. We ate breakfast to start the day. After breakfast, we head to a secondary school in Sarawak which is the SMK Siburan. In the school, we were welcomed by kompang and a traditional Bidayuh and a Chinese dance by the students there. It was a great performance. We had a really nice time getting to know the students there. We were told about the academic achievements and values of the school. Their school system is a bit different then ours. The students had to go through six years of primary school similar to us, had their PSR(psle). If they passed, they had to go through five years of secondary school. They will be having their streaming examination in their third year of secondary school. They then proceed to the next year and then have their SPM( O levels) on their fifth year. Their discipline system is tight. Though there are ‘gangster’ students in the school, these students do not really dare to risk themselves. We had the chance to walk around the school. The school have many staffrooms for teachers of different department. It was time for us to depart. We thank the school for having us there. We even exchange email address and phone numbers with each other. It was really an experience for us. We board our bus and proceed to Gunung Gading which took about 1 and half hour. Most of us slept during the journey to the national park. We had a light lunch there. After lunch, we began our trekking. The weather is nice. Its neither hot nor cold. It’s a challenge for us as we had to follow the trail. The stairs are very steep and high. We learnt different types of plants and trees such as pitcher plant, selunsor putih, kayu malam and buttress root. The selunsor putih is also known as the ‘sexy lady’ as the tree always ‘strips’. The kayu malam (night wood) glows in the dark. The walk took about 1 and a half hour. After that we make our way to the hotel. We meet up again at 0630 in the evening for our dinner. We had our dinner at Hartz chicken and buffet. The dish served is mainly chicken. It was delicious and we really filled our stomaches. Right after dinner we were given time to shop. We were given about 45 minutes to buy snacks and souvenirs. We assemble at the entrance and then make our way back to the hotel.

Group 1's take on Day 2

Today , we had spent our last moments at the Longhouse . All of us have learnt to organise our time well as we had to assemble at 7am . With patience , we managed to dress up and get ready in time although the showerwater was not much and there was only one toilet . There , we had our breakfast which consists of Fried Noodles and tea which tastes like coffee . Yet , we had to be grateful to god that we received sufficient food . Not only that , it was raining cats and dogs . With everyone’s part , we managed to move from one place to another by using a smart idea of using the school banner as a shelter ; umbrella . All of us worked together as one to overcome that situation . After that , we proceeded to Kampong Telagah Air . First , we learnt how to cook a kueh called “ kueh penyeram “ . Everyone had their chance to take turns to cook and be brave . From there , we went to find out from an uncle who lives at that kampong who is actually a Boat Crafter . With his experience , we learnt about how hard work leads to success like a big boat being crafted well . Then , our group headed to a home-stay of a fisherman’s house . All of us soon get to know more about the lifestlye of a kampong and get to know the difference with our way of living and their’s . Continued , we went to go fishing . Fishing is actually a skill , and today we get to Experience it . With that , everyone was determined to catch a fish , and never gave up although they have failed to catch one . After that , we had lunch . The food was extremely mouth-watering as we get to eat their traditional food . Then , we went to “ Kedai Kek Lapis Dayang Salhah “ which sells Kek Lapis Serawak . There were many varieties of home-made lapis which we get to order to bring back to Singapore to share with our family . We also learnt more about the different types of cats in the “ Muzium Pusak “ . And then , we get to check in to the Merdeka Palace Hotel where we get to rest and enjoy the pleasure after living in a longhouse for one night before we headed for dinner . What we ate for dinner was mostly seafood . Eg : sweet n sour fish , prawn shrimp , shark’s fin soup and more . from there , we walked around the city to buy some tidbits or snacks just on case we were hungry in the middle of the night . now , we are all at the hotel , preparing for tomorrow’s activities . and we think that is goin to be fun as we are going to a secondary school in sarawak to exchange knowledge and make friends . not to forget , going trekking and many more . that’s all for today’s reflection and well continue tomorrow . goooodniteeeeeeeeeeeeeees ‘ (:

Group 1's take on Day 1

Different types of tribal cultures can be found here. Such as the Ibans and the Bidayuhs. . We are able to adapt to the rural environment of a ‘dayak’ lifestyle. We stayed in an Iban longhouse. We went to the different types of longhouse during the day. We enjoyed ourselves looking at the traditional instruments of the tribes. After a long day looking at the different types of longhouses, it is time for lunch. The food served is very delicious. They are cooked traditionally. The Ibans are the strongest tribe among others. They practice head hunting thousands of years ago. They hunt the heads of their enemies to show their commitment towards their tribe and their family. This shows their bravery. We also learnt the history of each different tribe. We learnt how the sago, rice were made. We learnt how the blowpipe was formed. We got to mix around with the ethnic people n got to know them. We too learnt the rules of living and respect the things in a longhouse by not touching certain things. Finally, our dinner was a mouth-watering finish as we get to fill our stomach after all the walking and before we get to sleep. We watched the international dance group performed by the different type of ethnic tribes and we enjoyed it. I think that today was really fun and an exciting day. We are all looking forward to tomorrow’s schedule. For now, time to sleep. Goodniteeeeeeeeeeeeee .

Day 3 at Sarawak with GROUP 3!

Reflection Day 3
1. Breakfast
We had our breakfast after getting ready at about 7am. It was buffet style and thus has a lot of varieties. There were nasi lemak, sandwiches and even cereal to choose from. Plus there is also ice cream, ICE CREAM IN THE MORNING! Cool ya’know. The service and ambience there were five stars. 

2.SMK Siburan
We were welcomed by the friendly students from SMK Siburan. Dance performance from them was interesting and entertaining. It was performed by their Creative Art Club. It was a warm well welcome. We then proceed to their conference room for the speeches. I then realize that all of the students were prefects and are from the afternoon sessions, which is the lower secondary and the morning session will be the upper secondary. Talking about speeches, our students did very well and were very confident to talk in front of the other students. Most of the teachers were very proud of our school.YEAH! Then there was a presentation done by the prefects of the school. It was called the ‘Colours of SMK Siburan 2nd Version’. It was a great presentation to show how united and how the school has improved through the years of proper discipline and the determination to make the school from a normal school to a top form and an excellent academic school. After the presentation, the principal presented our school a token of appreciation for visiting the school and we also present them a token too! We had a great time touring around the school and learning the different systems of the school. We would like to visit the school again if we were to visit Sarawak and it would be an opportunity to learn and make friends.

3.Gunung Gading National Park
This is the home to the biggest plant in the world, Rafflesia. It can be around 1m in width when it is full bloom. The drive from Kuching to the park is about 2 hours. Thus most of us students had some rest before trekking. We had our lunch which consists of sandwich and muffins there before starting the trekking. We had seen a lot of plants such as night wood (kayu malam) which glows in the night, pitcher plants that is a carnivore (hehehe) and selunsor putih aka sexy lady because of it keep stripping of it’s bark. In all this is a great experience as we got the opportunity to witness and learn more about the biggest plant in the world. Plus we were also the first group to witness the flower bloom.

4.Dinner & Shopping
We had our dinner over at Sarawak Plaza, Hartz Chicken. It was buffet style so yes we had a feast. The food which is mainly chicken was so delicious-looking that we can’t resist not having a second helping. The chickens were cooked in different styles such as roasted chicken, in a casserole and KFC-style (spicy & crispy). We end our dinner with a yummy ice cream. After which, we walked around the mall to shop. We bought a lot of things such as souvenirs for those back home. We even have the time to head to the Toy’s World to see all the toys there. And there we saw the boys playing lego like small kids. It was our last day to stay in the hotel so we didn’t waste any time to have fun here with fellow room mates. :D

Till here, we end our reflection. This is group 3 :D

Day 2 at Sarawak with GROUP 3!

Group 3 reflection day 2

1.Telaga Air Village

After our check out at the Sarawak Cultural Village, we head to the Telaga Air Village. There live all the Malay people in their kampong. When we reached there, we gathered at a cooking area where they are going to demonstrate the way of cooking a kind of kueh. It is called the kueh penyeram. The making of this kueh is so easy. Then we went to see how the boat is made. We learnt the different types of wood that are used to make the boat. We discovered that the boat can cost up to a few thousands ringgit depending on the size and speed of the boat. We realize that even an expert architect would take more than three months to build a boat. This is because they are not expert enough to build a simple and safe boat. The people there are able to build a boat in less than three months. They have many experiences on making the boat. There are also many different types of equipments to make a boat. After a look on how the boat is made, we went on to visit the village, Madam Dara Binte Obeng’s house. It was totally different from what the house is expected, as in, the house is supplied with electricity. I thought kampong doesn’t use electricity. Other than that, Madam Dara Binte Obeng told us about her family background and the most interesting part is that she and her family build her own house! They made the house by themselves with wood planks and stuff. Handmade house. We now know that it’s a basic respect for them to serve drinks and light refreshment for us, to them it’s a must. Our group then head back to the gathering place to head for the well, history well, Telaga Air. But it was a disappointment that it’s been renovated and the well has been removed. Hence, we went on to fishing! Everyone was excited. All of us were very patient waiting for the fishes to get caught, but in the end there were no fishes. Nonetheless, we had fun learning to catch fishes. Then its lunch time, we went back to have our lunch. Aunty Lin told us that we would be having traditional dishes kindly made by the people there. It was delicious even though the environment there was quite bad but we learn to appreciate things.

2.The Cat Museum, Museum Pusak

At the cat museum, we had fun exploring the museum and learnt about cats around the world. One of the cat that I found out was the Singapore cat. I thought it was the lion but it wasn’t. The Singapore Cat was a bit smaller than other cats. Thus that is all I know about Singapore Cats, which is why I would like to know more about it. That is also a lot of souvenir shops that we can buy things for loved ones back home. There were even a grave of a cat there! Anissya and Sakinah (from another group) bought a very super cute shirt as a souvenir. :D

3.Kek Lapis Sarawak

We arrived at Dayang Salha Kek Lapis. The feast of different kek lapis was really amazing. There were many choices to choose from such as Blueberry Kek Lapis, Tembikai Kek Lapis, Chocolate Walnut Kek Lapis and more. There were even ‘cake in a cake’ like swiss roll which is super nice and delicious. What more it’s cheap with an offer of free kek lapis of your choice if your orders reach RM100. We had a hard time choosing which flavor to buy as all looked appetizing and appealing. We would definitely visit again if we have the chance.

We checked in Merdeka Palace hotel which is a 5 star hotel, so WOOHOOO. Everyone was excited when we enter our apartment. It really meets our expectation and we enjoy the whole time there.

4.Dinner & Shopping
We had our seafood dinner at a hawker centre. Eventhough it’s hawker centre, the food was scrumptious and we were full once we finish eating. We had eaten different kinds of seafood such as sweet & sour fish, deep fried prawn and many more. After that we went different ways with the boys. We girls went to grocery shopping whereas they boys went to Sarawak Plaza. We bought tidbits and food to be eaten.

That’s all for Day 2. We are looking forward to day 3. Good Night!

Day 1 at Sarawak With GROUP 3!

Our official group which is group 3 has decided to choose 4 main highlights of the day 1 at the Sarawak Cultural Village.

1. The Malay LonghouseOver at the Malay House, the first thing is to take off our shoes as form of respect toward the owner of the house, and it`s also for cleanliness. Then, we were informed about the rules and regulations in the house. During the old days, young ladies are not allowed to leave their house as they are not married yet. The pink curtains represents that there are young ladies in the house. If the house is big, it means that it is the chief’s of the village house.

2. The Delicious Food At The Sarawak Cultural Village
The food at the restaurant in the Malay Cultural Village was so delicious that each of us could not leave the restaurant without a second serving. There are many different types of traditional dishes served. Example, chicken which is cook by the BULOH method, it is cook in the bamboo and the chicken would so called produce the gravy itself. I think that dish is the favorite of all dishes. The taste is so delicious, to the extreme delicious. Not only that, I was so curious when I found out that our orange juice is warm, it’s hot, like boiling water. I have never taste it hot before. But I made it history today! I think today’s meal was satisfying.

3. Penan Hut
At the Penan Hut, we called it PONDOK SUMPIT, everyone was panic because there are smoke, thick smoke in the air. Everyone was keen to find out where it came from. But in the end, we noticed that it came from the Penan Hut where the people there was burning the bamboos to make the blowpipe. Our Tourguide then further explain what is happening and the uses of blowpipes and it’s functions. We later then discovered that the blowpipe can also be used as a spade! We learnt how to hold the blowpipe In a proper manner and how to blow it properly. Overall this activity was totally fun and exciting! Its wasn’t a regret afterall, it’s a once in a lifetime trying all these interesting stuff.

4. The Bidayuh Dance
On the night of day 1, we learnt a few steps of the Bidayuh dance. Most of the dance steps represent the bird of their own tribe for example the Iban Dance has a movement of dance similar to the movement of the Hornbill. Then the Bidayuh dance that we learnt symbolized the movement of the Eagles. There are different types of dances, but we only learnt the simple steps of the Bidayuh’s . Firstly, our body was very stiff. We were like robots. Then our instructors told us to relax and feel the feeling of the dancing of Bidayuh dancing. We tried to relaxed and after a while, we got used to it. Then our dancing became better and better after a few practices and we enjoyed it very much.

All in all, we had a lot of fun for the first day in Sarawak. We think this is a very rare experience to experienced. It is difficult to find such experience nowadays. We are looking forward to day two tomorrow. :D

Group 4’s third day (05.11.2009, Thursday)

Breakfast was delicious and classy.there werejust too many food for us to choose!each of us woke up early to enjoy the fresh food.after that, we board the bus around 0800hrs.we then head to a local school which is known as SMK Siburan.we felt welcomed with the traditional instrument called the ‘kompang’ which was played by the school boys.then, another graceful welcoming dance by a group of dancers.

After which,we walked to the conference room to have a welcoming speech by head girl,Stephanie followed by the opening speech from the principal,Mr Tilai Balla Udan.then,Ms Hazliana addressed her speech.we felt the comfort and their hospitality since we step in the school.the environment was garden like and we could also felt the fresh air.

They then present a slideshow called ‘The colour of SMK Siburan 2nd version.’The content was most likely about the school’s achievements within the past few years, their disciplinary system, their hostel management for the students and what they expect in the coming years.we then had a Q & A session.

Then their principal and ms hazliana exchanged souvenirs as a token of appreciation. We then sing our school song and the SKY cheer. We felt very proud of ourselves. They also sang their song and their unique way of thanking us which was saying thank you in 6 different languages.we had a tour around the school lead by a cute prefect which is roughly around the height of a lower primary student.

We first head to the herbal garden where they planted different types of herbs which is used for consumption and experiments.we then visited the bookshop.the size is roughly around half of our Seng Kang Sec classroom.they then brought us to different rooms which is owned by different subject departments.then we visited the library which was smaller than our library.then followed by the prefect’s room.

We then exchanged email address and even give them a small token.hayati gave them a Singapore keychain which is actually a nail clipper.how cute is that? . We all waved goodbye.we miss them a lot.

We had a journey to the Gunung Gading National Park which was a 1 hour plus journey away from the SMK Siburan.we had lunch at the park’s hut.we had trekking there for around an hour. We managed to view the rafflesia.the weather was nice to us.it didn’t rain. After that tiring day, we went back to our hotel to freshen up before our buffet dinner.we then had our dinner at Hartz chicken buffet.the food was awesome.we wish we could have another meal there.

Group 4’s second day (04.11.2009, Wednesday)

The surrounding was filled with fresh air. It’s our second day of our Sarawak trip. The wakeup call was 7am today. After a few minutes of briefing of what we are going to do before lunch, we head for breakfast at the long house. Today’s breakfast is kind of special as, it will be our last meal at the long house. After that, meals will be at somewhere else as our accommodation has changed which is to Merdeka Palace Hotel. It is one out of the three five stars hotel in Sarawak. It rained heavily after we had our breakfast. But thank GOD, it was only for awhile.

We put on our thinking caps on finding the way to not get the luggage wet when they are being transported to the bus from the entrance of the cultural village. After breakfast, we visited, ‘Kampung Telaga Air’. At the kampung or village in English, we learned how to make the traditional Sarawak kuih called Kuih Penyaram. An old lady taught us ways on how to make the kuih. The kuih is simply nice and sweet. Everyone was given a chance to fry their own kuih.

After that, we walked around a few distance away till we reached a hut where it is specially for creating boats. An old man explained to us his experience and ways to create a boat. It roughly takes around 2 months to create a boat. He has more than 30 years of experience the lowest price of a boat is around RM2800.Bigger boats needs more helps which simply means that he needs more man.

After the long explanation on how to make boats, each group was assigned to different house to explore the fishing mans’ house and to also feel the atmosphere on how is it like to live in a kampung house. We had a half an hour friendly talk with the owner. He showed us around his house and his ‘instruments’ that he uses for fishing.

We were then brought to a jetty to have our fishing activity. None of the SKY caught a fish. How sad. . We then had lunch at the kampung site. Although the dishes were quite simple, all of us indulge it fully. Maybe because we were just too hungry. We then had a 1 hour ride to the Cat Museum or what Aunty Lin told us; ‘Musium Pusak’. Though the museum was quite small, the statues and pictures displayed were great. Posters and pictures of cats are just everywhere!

After a half an hour visit at the cat museum, we head for another long ride to the Kek Lapis factory. Kek Lapis Dayang Salha sells unique taste of kek lapis. They have blueberry, durian, watermelon, white chocolate, walnut, almond, Cadbury and many more flavors. They were just irresistible! We are even allowed to order our kek lapis and have them delivered to us by Friday. So that our friends and families in Singapore can taste it in a fresh condition.

We then head to our hotel and had a 3 hour rest. We had to be in the lobby at 7pm so that we can have our dinner. Everyone gathered at the lobby and without further delay, we bought the bus and head to Top Shot Seafood Restaurant. Of course, we had seafood for dinner. The dishes are SUPERB!! We chilled for awhile and the ladies and gentlemen *ehem went separate ways to shop for light snacks.

By now, all of my team mates should already be sound asleep and its 0100am. Here I am doing the summarized version of day 2’s reflection.IM STILL AWAKE.HAYATI IS STILL AWAKE.

Group 4’s first day (03.11.2009, Tuesday)

As this is our first trip to Sarawak without our parents for most of us, the only feeling that we had was excitement. We felt that we are free like a bird being released from its cage. We had friends and teachers not to forget, tour guides too to accompany us throughout this learning journey. We reached Sarawak around 1010hrs and settled down at the Cultural Village around after noon. By the time, we had lunch at the Cultural Village. Lunch was delicious and tasty! The dishes served were different from what we had in Singapore.

We had a one night stay at the Cultural Village in the Iban Longhouse. With the extra informations from Aunty Lin, our tour guide, we now know that there is over 33 languages and more than 28 races in Sarawak. We visited 7 different longhouses. They are, The Bidayuh longhouse, Iban longhouse, Penan hut, Orang Ulu longhouse,Melanau tallhouse,Malay town house and lastly, the Chinese Farm house. Other than that, we watched how a lady around her late 40s did a traditional cracker called the ‘Love Letter’. We also watched a dance performance performed by the villagers. The moves were totally awesome! In addition, we’ve learned that once, the Orang Iban practiced head hunting. Trying out the warrior’s blowpipe was one of the try-out activities.

After the tiring and sweaty day, we had a short rest, followed by dinner. Then; we had a dance session with two senior dancers. We’re taught the Bidayuh dance. The boys and the girls had different steps. After a few rounds of practicing which just gets better after each round, we (both boys and girls) danced gracefully while the teachers took snap shots and videos. We end the day with lights snacks and hot drink for our supper.

Nama berita? (That's 'apa khabar' or 'how are you' in Sarawak dialect)
So I finally managed to get internet access from the hotel we are at! Sadly, the internet service is not free hence the kids cant update daily. They will only get a chance to do so tomorrow night after the respective group leaders have consolidated all their reflections. We are having a ball of a time here in Sarawak! I shall not steal the limelight from the students; lets leave the story telling to them. For now, I'll let the pictures do the talking :)
